Joe came home the other night and told me about a conversation him and another pastor were having. One thing he said hasn’t really left my head. It was just a passing comment really. He was talking about the parable in Matthew dealing with the talents. (its under the post if you want to read it.) The parable talks about this man going on a trip. Before he leaves he passes out talents to his slaves. He passes out the talents according to the ability of each person. To the most able person, he gives 5 talents, to the least able he gives 1. THe slaves with 5 and 2 talents use them and earned more. The person with 1 talent didn’t do a thing with it. He was too scared he would mess up. I think the person with 1 talent had to look over and compare himself with the servant with 5 talents. He knew he was never going to do as well as him so he just buried what he did have. THe end of the passage refers to the one that dug a hole and hid his money as a worthless slave.
In this parable, God is the master and we are the slaves. He is the creator and has determined which servant gets what talents and how many. Some of us have a lot, some of us just has 1 string on the banjo. Whatever your gifts and abilities, make sure you are using them for the Lord. If you are really good with kids, make sure you are serving in the nursery. If you are really good at the piano, get up there and play a song. If you love to cook, make someone some mexican food. If you love to teach the word of God, teach it to SOMEONE. If you love crafts, make someone a card with a bible verse on it. If you like to decorate, make a wreath for your church. God didn’t give us our talents to hide in the dirt. He gave us abilities to use for His kingdom. Just something to chew on today.
SIde note: If you are NOT good at decorating do not make anything to hang in the church because that will just be awkward when it mysteriously disappears. If you are NOT good at making deviled eggs do not make them and give them to your pastor’s wife and later ask her “did you like the deviled eggs I made you”…. or jello with things floating around in it.
We have family coming in tomorrow. I have no business being on the computer. I have a can of opened paint and 4 half painted kitchen chairs next to me. I really need to be working on that….
Matthew 25:14-30
13 “Therefore stay alert, because you do not know the day or the hour. 14 For it is like a man going on a journey, who summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The one who had received five talents went off right away and put his money to work and earned five more. 17 In the same way, the one who had two gained two more. 18 But the one who had received one talent went out and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money in it. 19 After a long time, the master of those slaves came and settled his accounts with them. 20 The one who had received the five talents came and brought five more, saying, ‘Sir, you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’ 21 His master answered, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful in a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 The one with the two talents also came and said, ‘Sir, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have gained two more.’ 23 His master answered, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 Then the one who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Sir, I knew that you were a hard man, harvesting where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered, ‘Evil and lazy slave! So you knew that I harvest where I didn’t sow and gather where I didn’t scatter? 27 Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received my money back with interest! 28 Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten. 29 For the one who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30 And throw that worthless slave into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”
